A dimensional finish system that introduces depth,
shadow, and material expression.

Strata™ is Timberline Studio's proprietary dimensional surface system — a surface treatment that creates real, tactile character in wood before a precision factory-applied architectural color is applied on top.
The result is a surface that holds and releases light differently at every angle. The character changes with the time of day, the season, and the light source. It is a surface that cannot be replicated in the field.
No other manufacturer in the US market offers this combination of physical dimensional relief and factory-applied architectural color on wood. Strata™ is a category of one.
No charring. No fire. No carbon surface. Strata™ is an entirely different process and an entirely different aesthetic.
Wire brushing removes soft grain to reveal hard grain underneath. Strata™ adds physical dimension — it builds up, not just removes.
Standard prefinished wood has a flat surface with a color coating. Strata™ has physical depth that interacts with light in a way that flat surfaces cannot.
The dimensional relief and color system must be applied in our controlled factory environment. It cannot be replicated in the field.
Lighting placement is not just an aesthetic decision — it determines how much of the surface's character is visible after installation. For maximum visual impact, position light sources at 15–30° from parallel to the wall. Coordinate lighting design with the architect or interior designer before board orientation is finalized.

Light parallel to the surface creates the most dramatic shadow depth — ideal for feature walls where texture is the design focal point.
Light perpendicular to the surface minimizes shadow depth — a different but equally valid visual character, calmer and more refined.
Window light from the side is the single best source for dimensional relief — the surface changes character throughout the day as the sun moves.
Every Strata™ finish has two SKUs — exterior and interior — with coating formulations optimized for each environment. Samples available on Cedar.
Warm amber-gold with bold grain expression. Rich and luminous in direct light.
Deep espresso brown. Dark and anchoring — grain visible at close range with light raking across the surface.
Honey-amber with warm orange undertone. One of the most tactile finishes in the collection.
Deep army green — bold and grounding. Grain relief creates layered tonal depth from forest to olive.
Golden with reddish undertones. Warm bone base — wood and relief create rich warmth in all light conditions.
Warm sand-taupe. The most neutral finish in the collection — pairs with virtually any material palette.
Predominantly black with a subtle green undertone. The deepest, most dramatic finish in the collection.

Kiln dried, select grade. Classic warm grain character — best for design-forward residential and interior feature walls. Acclimation required before installation.
Dense, rich grain structure. Stronger grain relief expression than cedar. Kiln dried. Higher resin content — creates a bolder dimensional relief character.
Acetylated radiata pine. Superior dimensional stability — ideal for high-UV south and west exposures and high-humidity Gulf Coast climates. 50-year above-ground substrate warranty. No acclimation required. FSC-certified. Produced without toxic biocides — no added chemicals.
Thermally modified wood. Enhanced durability and dimensional stability through heat treatment only — no added chemicals, no toxic preservatives. Excellent for demanding exterior exposures. No acclimation required. A responsible choice for sustainability-focused projects.
Don't have an existing lumber relationship? No problem. Our trusted lumber partners ship Cedar, Accoya, and Thermory directly to our San Marcos studio — no extra coordination required on your end. Just tell us what you need.

A field mockup is strongly recommended prior to full installation — to evaluate color variation, lighting interaction, and installation quality in the actual project conditions.
Use boards from the actual project order for the mockup. Review at multiple times of day before approving.

The inherent beauty of Strata™ comes from working with natural wood — a living material with a rich spectrum of hues, grains, and textures that no two boards share exactly. While our process is identical across every board and quality control is performed on every single piece that leaves our studio, the nature of wood means that color, grain pattern, and relief depth will vary between boards.
This variation is not a defect. It is the defining characteristic of a natural material product — and it is what gives an installed Strata™ wall its depth, movement, and life. We strongly recommend a field mockup prior to full installation so all parties can review and approve the natural variation in the actual project lighting conditions before work begins.
Sample boards are on Cedar. Specify interior or exterior application when requesting. No minimums. 2–3 week lead time.
